Dear Shih-ying,
Regretfully we must inform you that we are not able to grant you admission for graduate study in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University. Although your academic credentials are certainly outstanding, the large size and excellent quality of this year's applicant pool for our graduate program required us to deny admission to many qualified students such as you. We are a relatively small department in terms of faculty size, and we go to great measures to ensure that we can adequately supervise and support all of our admitted graduate students, something that can only be accomplished by limiting admission to the program.
We do want to wish you the very best as you pursue your graduate career, and we thank you for considering our department in your plans. Again, we regret that we could not respond to your application in a positive fashion.
With best regards,
David Barnett

Graduate Application for Autumn, 2010
Dear Ms. YU:
Thank you for your application to the University of Washington Graduate School. Your file has been carefully reviewed by the graduate admissions committee in the Materials Science & Engineering (PhD) program.
Unfortunately, the committee has decided not to recommend your admission and I have accepted that decision. The number and quality of graduate applicants to the University of Washington are extraordinary and these difficult decisions are reached through careful consideration of all applicants to a given program. In many cases, enrollment restrictions are also a factor, limiting our ability to accept all qualified applicants.
If you have questions regarding the reasons for this decision, they should be directed to the graduate program.
I realize that this outcome is disappointing, but I do thank you for the time and effort you invested into applying to a graduate program at the UW, as I recognize that expenditures of money and time to do so can be considerable. I wish you well in your future educational endeavors.
Sincerely,
Gerald J. Baldasty
Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School
University of Washington

Dear Ms. Yu:
Thank you for your interest in the Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering. I am sorry to inform you that the Admissions Committee, which reviewed your application and credentials, did not recommend admission.
Graduate programs at Rutgers receive applications from many outstanding candidates. Space availability, limited faculty resources, and competition among well qualified applicants prevent programs from offering admission to all who seek it, even among many who meet or exceed expected requirements. Please know that your application and supporting credentials were closely and carefully read by the Committee.
Admission decisions are difficult both for Committee members, who must carefully review applications to admit the best possible candidates, and applicants who anxiously await notification. I regret having to convey this disappointing news, but genuinely wish you every success in accomplishing your goals.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Schultz
Admissions Officer
